Mondays are usually connected with a negative connotation, Manic Mondays, Case of the Mondays, etc. I can’t think of a worse way to embark on a new week than going into the first day with an attitude of doom and gloom! I want to take a minute, yes, just a minute, to help shift that perspective. Mondays are exciting! It is a new week, a new beginning, today we embark on a week full of opportunities and potential. How can you not be excited when you look at it like that?
I am going to ask you to do something that may be uncomfortable. I promise you, it has the potential to completely change your life though.
Did you know that meditation is proven to have positive physiological effects?
It doesn’t take much either. Today, I am just asking for a minute, 60 seconds.
Personally, I have found that meditation has done more this naturally high-strung, control freak than any pill a doctor has every doled out. Not to mention it is a much more healthy option.
Find a comfortable spot and grab a timer and set it for one minute. (or if you don’t have one, most phones have them and there are many great apps you can download for free to time or aid you in meditation!)
- Sit in a comfortable position that you can hold through the duration of the minute, keeping your spine straight. (Good posture is key here!)
- Close your eyes and focus on your breathing. Try to breathe through your nose.
- Take slow, deep breaths in, allowing yourself to feel the air enter your nose, fill your lungs, expand your belly. Hold briefly and exhale, again, feeling the air slowly escape from your body.
- If your mind begins to wander, gently redirect it back to your breathing. Be mindful of each sensation created through your breath.
- Continue until your timer sounds.
Congratulations! Now you are ready for the week ahead of you! Try to do this every morning before you begin your day. Feel free to do it for longer. Most importantly, let your meditation be what it is, let go of judgment and expectation when you practice. Each experience is unique.
