I have been experimenting with different natural deodorant recipes for a while. Up until now it has been a lot of trial and error, whether it just wasn’t effective enough, or it wouldn’t stay solid. I finally found one that I feel comfortable turning to on a daily basis. Being one of those people that if it didn’t say “antiperspirant”, I wasn’t interested. I didn’t want to sweat or deal with anything that came along with it. Bring on the chemical sh*+storm!

It wasn’t until the past couple years that I have learned that it is possible to naturally stay dry and fresh. Using coconut oil along with some essential oils, the antibacterial properties help prevent odor, and using an absorbent ingredient like arrowroot powder helps prevent the dreaded pit-stains.

One of the other cool things about making my own products, is it seems like a lot of the ingredients are used in many things. I already had all of the ingredients for this from using them in things like lip balm, dry-shampoo, and so on. See, being more natural doesn’t have to break the bank!

You will need a deodorant container.

1/4 cup Coconut Oil

3/8 cup beeswax (I prefer pellets as they melt more quickly)

3/8 cup baking soda

3/8 cup arrowroot powder

10 drops Melaleuca Essential Oil

10 drops Ylang Ylang Essential Oil

10 drops Citrus Bliss Essential Oil

  • Add beeswax and coconut oil to a double boiler over low heat (or a glass container sitting in a pot of boiling water) and melt
  • Remove from heat
  • Add baking soda and arrowroot powder, making sure it is mixed well
  • Add essential oils (You can switch them, but I find that the ylang ylang is great for the skin, the melaleuca helps to prevent odor, and the citrus bliss adds a great, clean smell, among other reasons), again, making sure it is mixed well
  • Carefully pour into deodorant container
  • Let cool and use!

I also like this natural deodorant recipe without the beeswax, but I found that it needs to be refrigerated to prevent melting.   Feel free to tweak to fit what works best for you!
